By the Hair of the Peaky Blinders

August 10, 2016 By //  by The Beardsgaards

Peaky Blinders is a visual masterpiece of a TV show set in Birmingham, England in 1919, one of the always stellar Netflix Originals. The Blinders are a bunch of war vets turned sort of businessmen but mostly gangsters who get their name from their habit of sewing razor blades into their hat brims for easy blinding in a fight. Which they get in often.

The haircuts have become a bit of a thing lately, because they’re both tough and classic, sharp and low maintenance, easy going and aggressive. A few are more refined, but still easy as can be to wear. Explore the world of unauthorized Blinder hair, cut and photographed by superfans.

Industrie Online is a hair industry online magazine (as the name would imply) that does some truly inspired work. They are also good friends of the shop. So when they came to us for Peaky Blinders haircut photos for a story, a hell of a ball started rolling, and it hit the bottom of the hill within one week, crashing into 12 models, 6 characters and 36 photos at the bottom.

Tommy Shelby

The Character

Played by Cillian Murphy, Tommy Shelby is the leader of the Blinders, a man changed by the tunnels of WWI. Steely, mysterious, sharp but no fuss, this haircut is built for intimidation with ease, especially on the gaunt and creepy types.

The Cut & Style

Super short sides, barely lined, barely blended, slight disconnection toward the top. Cut evenly all around, it’s ambidextrous, low maintenance and tolerates hat wearing while still looking good.

The Product

Use a smoothing product like Davines Invisible Serum to keep it natural while getting rid of frizz.

The Heads

Model: Natalie Anderson ~ Barber: Tyler Anderson {Beardsmith}

This is Natalie, one half of the mom and pop pair of Beardsgaard founders. This photo set was shot by Beardsmith, because we couldn’t make the manual shutter release work. This is how the Beardsgaards do married people stuff. As luck would have it, Natalie has been sporting this cut all summer already, and got to borrow Scott’s clothes. Sometimes the work’s a little harder.

It should also be noted that when people ask if we cut women’s hair and we say yes, this is the kind we mean.

Model: Evan Hoffman ~ Barber: Natalie Anderson {Blademaiden}

This is Evan, our 16-year-old Tech-Saavy At-Risk Youth (assistant Shopkeep), cut and shot by Blademaiden. Believe it or not, she is not his mother. But d’awww, he’s growing up so fast.

Arthur Shelby

The Character

Arthur, played by Paul Anderson, is a bit of a black sheep, even in the Shelby family. Dude has some problems, but he tries real hard. His haircut is essentially an old timey, rough as hell slickback bowlcut.

The Cut & Style

Nice short sides and a top that reaches all the way to the back of your skull, with a bit of a blend at the baseline so you’re not Macklemore. Best of all, it looks just as good slicked as it does floppy after a good row.

The Product

Use a slick oil-based pomade like Reuzel Pink or Iron Heritage Model T Pomade.

The Heads

Model: Rob Murphy ~ Barber: Natalie Anderson {Blademaiden}

This is Rob, the guy prints our fantastic T-shirts. He usually wears this loose with no product, but with the tiniest bit of work, this majesty is what you get, even out of baby fine hair like his is (you totally can’t tell, can you?)

Model: Gabe Foss ~ Barber: Natalie Anderson {Blademaiden}

This is Gabe, who we spotted at Brick in Geneva. With hair that perfect, Blademaiden wasn’t shy about being a total weirdo about asking this 16-year-old (his dad was there, don’t worry) to come to this strange place to get a haircut and get his picture taken in the basement. If we ever accost you and your great hair about town, see, we totally mean no harm. We just make you look good and you get some neat headshots out of the deal.

John Shelby

The Character

Played by Joe Cole, John Shelby is a shitkicker if there ever was one. He would be pretty if he wasn’t so bad, so a super aggressive, DGAF haircut is required.

The Cut & Style

This is what we call 19-teens punk.We didn’t go full show haircut on this one, because let’s face it, on anyone else but that character in that period, that is a jacked haircut. We made it a little friendlier to modern fellas.

Roughly sheared on the sides and roughly shorn on top, this cut makes the most of insane cowlicks. Just adjust the blend to where things even out a bit.

The Product

Use a texture product with medium shine like Davines Finishing Gum.

The Heads

Model: Justin Marone ~ Barber: Natalie Anderson {Blademaiden}

This is Justin, who hadn’t even planned for this to be a thing. Blademaiden had popped in on a Wednesday to help knock out the walk-in wait, and asked if he was up for a weird haircut that day and to come back to get dappered and photographed. Luckily, he was the only dude that was legit Beardsmith’s size, so we didn’t have to fake clothes fitting. And he liked the haircut so much, he got it again next time.

Model: Maddox Primbas ~ Barber: Natalie Anderson {Blademaiden}

This is Maddox, who we met at a birthday party and promptly accosted his mother. That glint in the eye as he fought other partygoers with a lightsaber had John Shelby written all over it. We dropped the weight line a lot on his cut to keep pace with his wacky cowlicks, because this super simple haircut was made for them.

Michael Grey

The Character

Michael Grey, a long lost cousin, entered in the second season with technically better hair than any of the main cast. Taken from the matriarch of the Shelby family (aunt to the Shelby boys) at age 5 and put in foster care, Michael Grey, played by Finn Cole, ended up a little bit of a hothead. And maybe a bit murdery, too.

The Cut & Style

This cut can be a variety of lengths on the sides, but the neck and sideburns are relatively clean, with more weight at the transition area for a super classic look. This cut is best with some hard ass waves on top, because look at that little blonde fella there.

The Product

Use a pomade with a good amount of oil content, like Reuzel Green or Prospectors Gold Rush Pomade.

The Heads

Model: David Andersen ~ Barber: Tyler Anderson {Beardsmith}

This is David Andersen, teen of of the family behind our coffee, FreshGround Roasting. One of the best families we know, and if all teenagers were like him, we would have all of the hope for the future. Where are the replicators when we need them?

Model: David Rudek ~ Barber: Natalie Anderson {Blademaiden}

This is another David with the good hair, and a lot of hair it is. Pretty sure he needs to start collecting bowties after this.

Inspector Campbell

The Character

Playedin the show by a devilishly slimy Sam Neill, Inspector Campbell is pure blooded sociopath with really good hair and tailoring.

The Cut & Style

This is perhaps the most standard of the Blinders haircuts, a classic business cut, with extra care taken with the details. Best on that type of hair that’s like gunmetal shot with silver.

The Product

For product you want smooth but controlled, excellent styled with a mix of Davines Shine Wax and/or Strong Dry Wax.

The Heads

Model: Rob Farrington ~ Barber: Tyler Anderson {Beardsmith}

This is Rob, who you’ll often find engaged with us in off color ratta-tat-tat commenting on the Beardsgaard Facebook page. He’s quite the character all on his own, from Ditka to a Superfan to any random cop character. So, pretty much all the same character.

Model: Matt Erion ~ Barber: Natalie Anderson {Blademaiden}

This is Matt, who often brings his super smooshy bulldog Derby into the shop to awkwardly derp about (when our shop dogs aren’t around, because the can be jerks with other dogs). He’s into music, and making bow ties (he totally made that one!)

Alfie Solomons

The Character

Played with syrupy, slurry glee by Tom Hardy, Alfie Solomons is a pretend baker and real distiller with bursts of unpredictable rage. So, fun to watch. His is not so much a haircut, as a way of hair life.

The Cut & Style

This is almost the antithesis of a haircut, more a way of life. A slightly shaggy, not exactly parted thing that is best worn with days-old hair grease all up innit – just rake it through with your fingers each morning and you’re good to go.

The Product

For product you want something greasy, Reuzel Green or Iron Heritage Model T Pomade.

The Heads

Model: Neal Laman ~ Barber: Natalie Anderson {Blademaiden}

This is Neal, who was still unaware that the article had come out and he was making his rounds on the internet and his coworkers kept making Zoolander comments.

Model: Eric Stotko ~ Barber: Natalie Anderson {Blademaiden}

This is Eric, maybe actual giant with his maybe 6’8″ height and 19-inch neck. He was hard to fit in the basement/find clothes for (giant shirt and a lot of other clothes in this shoot from All Dressed Up Costumes, but that’s his gorgeous coat).

that’ll do it, gents

If you like these haircuts and are in the vicinity of Beardsgaard Barbers in Batavia, Illinois, we will send your head back in time. But if you live elsewhere, bring these photos to your barber, and tell them Beardsgaard says hello.
