Mid Spring Wishlist | April

Hello friends!

Remember last month’s wishlist post when we were feeling so springy? Yeah, right now, when clients sit down and we ask them how they’re doing, enthusiastic replies are few and far between.

This winter seems to have broken everyone, and although we have had brief glimpses of spring (and the bulbs are beginning to throw up green shoots! We saw little flowers the other day!), we all seem to have hunkered down again to wait out the (hopefully) last throes of winter. Consequently, our wishlist picks this month have quite a cold weather bent.

Tyler has plenty of manly finds of course, but fellas, make sure to check out Natalie’s section if you have a strange and/or androgynous elfin lady in your life.

Tyler’s Mid Spring Wishlist | April

Tyler April Wishlist

  1. Campfire Cologne | $13 ~ How cool is this? This stuff is literally matches that you light on fire, blow out and let the smoke waft over your flannel and giant beard. It even says so in the description. Reeeeally want to try this stuff.
  2. Kenneth Cole Reaction More Tricks Oxford Shoe ~ I want green shoes real bad. I found these ones on Pinterest, but as of yet have not been able to find them for sale. Perhaps one day I will run across the perfect green shoes in person.
  3. Knife & Flag Core Apron in Olive | $80 ~ I have been making more of an effort to buy fewer cheap items of clothing, and instead go for only perfectly fitting, high quality pieces. That means that I should probably start covering up a little while cutting hair. And look at all of the pockets!
  4. 1924 Brand Whisky Soaked Campfire Jerky | $16 ~ Do I really need to say more?
  5. printinggrounds Set of Four Cloth Napkins | $36 ~ We could probably even make our own versions of this, but the sentiment can’t be beat.
  6. The J. Peterman Company Leather Galluses | $98 ~ Remember Elaine’s job on Seinfeld where they wrote over-the-top flowery prose for all of their clothing? Yeah, turns out that is a real company that has been around since 1987 and has some really great clothes. I have a bit of a suspenders addiction, but I do not yet have leather ones!
  7. Urbanears Plattan Folding Headphones in Harris Tweed | $210 ~ I have been all about everything Harris Tweed lately. I have also downloaded the entire Song of Ice and Fire audiobook series. These facts are entirely related.
  8. Worleys Lighting Walnut Modern Bookends | $119 ~ The lighting in our house is terrible. This, however, might end up in our future shop instead.

Natalie April Wishlist

  1. DEsilk Handpainted Silk Scarf | $75 ~ It is still pretty cold out, but spring is coming, I know it! I want to wear something floaty and sky colored.
  2. For Strange Women Solid Perfume Locket with Natural River Stone | $76 ~ This Etsy shop is so unique and I want to check out quite a few of their wares. This locket, with a big polished white river on the front and whatever scent you choose inside. I keep looking at Violin in the Attic.
  3. Skinny Vinny Flyte Bowtie | $68 ~ We do so love bowties in this family – all three of us! This one is a little rich for my blood, but I have a mother-in-law that is magic with a sewing machine if I can find the fabric.
  4. Planetbox Rover Lunchbox | $40 ~ I have been eating lunch out far too much lately (at Antique Taco, which is perfection but can get expensive), and we are in saving-for-the-shop mode. Heating up leftovers can be a pain in our tiny and awkward little back room where the forks all grow legs and wander off, and I prefer to eat like a squirrel anyway. Basically, Bento boxes are how I was meant to eat, so this should be here any day now. Yes, I already ordered one, and I will make that money back in three weeks of not going out to lunch.
  5. Goorin Bros Mabel Rose Wool Cloche | $140 ~ As you may have noticed from the photos around this site, I love a good cloche. I saw this one in the Goorin shop on Milwaukee in Chicago, and I have not been able to get it out of my head. It is gorgeous.
  6. Edwin Jagger Tortoise Best Black Badger Shave Brush | $45 ~ Hudson Made was so kind as to send us some of their fantastic beard and shave soaps to sample (and we love them ever so much), but we could really use a better shave brush (we don’t shave much outside of the shop, you see).
  7. Dot & Bo Totoro Framed Print | $40 ~ We love Miyazaki in this house, all of it really, but My Neighbor Totoro might just be the favorite. Or Spirited Away? Or Princess Mononoke? So hard to choose. Nonetheless, we need this in the house.
  8. Nesco Snackmaster Pro Food Dehydrator | $75 ~ We recently began subscribing to NatureBox, which is pretty much the best thing ever for folks in the service industry who eat bits and pieces standing up in the back room when we get a moment, but we always go through the perfectly dried fruit so quickly. I want to make my OWN.

Have a favorite little something wonderful we should know about? Tell us about it in the comments.

We were deeply saddened by the news of Christopher We were deeply saddened by the news of Christopher Tolkien passing a year ago, and still are to this day. Our love of his father and Lord of the Rings is ever present here at Beardsgaard. So tonight we, and hopefully the rest of you, will take a moment to remember one of the greatest authors of all time, his son, and the impact the Tolkien family has had on our lives.
“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”

We know it’s a bit of a pain but it’s really to appease Phydeoux the shop dragon. He has a hunger for children and waivers, and we’d rather feed him waivers.

Well hello to those with wild beards who heard whi Well hello to those with wild beards who heard whispers of moving out of Tier 3 Mitigation! Please pause, we're not there yet.

This does not apply to the entire state of Illinois, only certain regions. As of now, we are still in Tier 3. We will announce when we have moved to Tier 2 on all of our social media channels as well as our email list, so sit tight until then!

Because knowledge is power, you also can go to http://dph.illinois.gov/regionmetrics?regionID=8 at any time and look at Region 8, which contains Kane County. As of this posting, we are not meeting the metric on hospital bed availability.

We promise, we want to get everything under your mask looking and feeling great, but we cannot do that until it's safe. Thank you for understanding, and please keep an eye out here, on Instagram or sign up for our email list at the bottom of www.beardsgaardbarbers.com to get updates.

We may specialize in short, traditionally masculin We may specialize in short, traditionally masculine haircuts, but Beardsgaard has always been a place for everyone; girls, guys, gays, theys - all identities and orientations find acceptance and a barbershop home here. If, however, you are looking for the luscious salon locks that are far less in our barberly skill set, we are the lucky next door neighbors of the incredible @coasthairsalon
Between the two of us, we have heads of every sort covered in spectacular hair, and positive vibes.
While we would love to see more than half of your While we would love to see more than half of your faces, until Illinois is out of Tier 3 we are just not allowed to do any face services. That means all beard trims and face shaves are not a thing for the foreseeable future. We know that’s a bummer for most of you but think of how epic and wizardry your beards will be once we can do trims!
For beard updates we will be posting across social media and sending an email out to those of you that are on the email list as soon as we know anything. Hang tight Gaardians, your face gardens will be pruned again some day.
When this year started, we eternal optimists could When this year started, we eternal optimists couldn’t have imagined what dragons were coming. With the support of this amazing community, this little barbershop made it through lockdown, occupancy restrictions, six flipping months of construction including losing our whole front entrance for months, are still in the middle of not being able to perform our signature services, but we’re all starting to see light on the other side. We don’t know what this next year will hold, but we believe this shop and this community will keep on adapting and end up stronger for it. We just hope, so hard, that the dogs will be able to return in 2021. In the meantime, we have the dragon. And all of you.
Over the years here, no one has held quite as many Over the years here, no one has held quite as many positions at Beardsgaard as Joey. As (at the time girlfriend, now wife) Amanda worked here, Joey was keen to fill in on desk when a shopkeep got sick, and he didn’t even work here yet. Nor did he yet when he let us tie him to a tree during the making of a dumb movie.

Eventually, he came to be a Shopkeep at Beardsgaard before, like Tyler, following his wife into the blade game and going to barber school, turning out to be really good at it. He progressed from intern to apprentice to a knighting to staff barber of Beardsgaard to beard model for our sibling shop’s most popular product, Deepwell.

And now, as if the fondest wish for any Gaardian, business ownership, taking over for Amanda as the head chair of Fox & Stone Barbers in St Charles while she is off wrangling puppies for a living in the vet world.

We wish him endless luck and happiness in his next steps, but we won’t miss him too much. As the dad of our dearly departed Mia, and the wiggly love sausage Mabel, he has agreed that Mabel should still work at Beardsgaard once we can have shop dogs again because she is so good at her job and misses all of you. So we’ll see him then! Huzzah!

Today is his last day, be sure to give him your love/hardcore trolling, whatever your relationship with him is. As you know, he’s a barber who can do both.
