A few times in our 5 years of business, we have been contacted out of the blue by some giant of the industry to do something huge.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is one of those times.
It has been less than a year since River Peak first brought the show on the road and set up a vendor booth at an event.
We have had the opportunity to get a few of these under our belts now (hardly forgetting anything important these days), but New Glarus (Wisconsin) Oktoberfest may be the richest in food and beer we have ever taken part in. Weirdly, 75% of the folks we met were actually from northern Illinois.
In the shimmering 95 degree Chicago heat, Lauren and I half expected the glitter blanketing the crowd to burst into flame. Bears were everywhere, but we were armed with stickers and merch aplenty, and we were ready.
For New Year’s the Beardsgaards got out of town for a hot minute, back to one of their favorite places in this flat, flat state we live in. Their were rocks and hot tubs. Come along, won’t you? Stories, video and photo galleries included.

If you aren’t following along on the out-of-the-shop adventures of Beardsgaard, journey to our realm. River Peak Apothecary, that is.
We would like to again apologize to Fermilab for all that we have put them through since we come to town. They’re smart. They’re nerds. They ooze sexual magnetism. Wait, that might be the bison. Because they have a herd of bison. What’s not to love?
Maybe the heat on the 92 degree fall day on which their 50th Anniversary Open House fell, but we won’t hold that against them. We will say, they should count themselves fortunate that the Moistmaker didn’t decide to reenact the sexy shirtless Jeff Goldblum Jurassic Park scene on their front steps.
Get on down to the bottom of this post to see the entire video, in which Moistmaker (also known as Joey, Joe when he’s feeling cool) interviews both a scientist, and a herd of bison. One of them responded by urinating in our general direction. You’ll have to watch to find out which.
Legendary Captain Fawcett founder Richie Finney will be on hand for the pre-launch signing of their new book, “The Gentleman’s Guide to Grooming: The Quintessential Handbook for the Modern Man” on Wednesday, October 4th from 7-9 PM. There will also be competitions and prizes aplenty. Join us.
October 4th is going to be an evening of fun and delights, but there will also be a rousing competition. Two, in fact!
Beardsgaard is known for the legendary beards and mustaches we get the pleasure of attending, and Captain Fawcett is known for keeping them looking tip-top and smelling like tales of far flung adventures. When you bring the founders of both together at the nerdiest barbershop this side of Midgard, something like a beard (and mustache) competition is bound to happen.
Keep reading for all the finer points of the happenings, as well as what the winners will be taking home, and see the full event post here.

Captain Fawcett, the man and the grooming brand, are legend. As is the man who calls himself The Captain’s Right Hand man, Richie Finney. It’s all quite tongue-in-cheek, you see, as the actual historical Lieutenant Colonel Fawcett (no relation) disappeared without a trace in the Amazon in 1925. They even made a movie about it.
While no one knows for sure what happened to Percy Fawcett the man, the brand Captain Fawcett is the realm of Mr. Finney, and renowned the world over, from the average gloriously hirsute fellow to the sets of movie and TV productions as fantastical as Lord of the Rings.
And he’s coming to Beardsgaard for a once-in-a-lifetime event, a pre-launch signing of his new book (US release 11/7). That Blademaiden happens to be in. You will not want to miss this. Read on for all the particulars.
We like to celebrate the successes around the shop.
We are a small business that kind of exploded into a much bigger thing. There are in fact two businesses now, Beardsgaard Barbers and River Peak Apothecary. Neither would have gotten started in the first place if Beardsmith and Blademaiden weren’t primarily the workers, because getting the doors open was priority #1, we had barely thought about hiring until we were well open and it became necessary.
Both thanks and congratulations are in order! We were honored to be a recipient of a 2017 Entrepreneurial Excellence Award in the category of Young Entrepreneurs for the Chicago Suburban region, but man were we in good company – Batavia took home 6 out of the 18 awards! Fuck Yeah Batavia indeed (#FYB)
Amanda is a dual-licensed barber of Beardsgaard who loves to make celebrations, especially employee birthdays, elaborate, whimsical and particularly trollish. Some time ago that earned her the title of Grandmaster of Pranks & Hazing.
But when her birthday, which happens to fall on Cinco de Mayo, rolls around, who is going to troll HER? Because she hates Christmas so very much, we had a very simple plan. Enjoy.
